In the summer of 2009, 18 student-athletes were devoted to helping children who are less fortunate through the universal languages of sport and love in New Orleans. In the summer of 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused over a thousand deaths and over 80 billion dollars worth of damage in Louisiana alone. A very large amount of New Orleans was flooded due to the catastrophic failure of many of the levees surrounding the city. These flood waters lasted for weeks and destroyed much the city's residential areas.
The SRU Forgotten Angels were able to raise around $8,000 for the New Orleans Relief Effort 2009 during the Spring Semester. We were able to send a group of student-athletes and coaches to New Orleans from May 3rd to May 8th. We accomplished our goal that we set for the trip! From 8am until 3pm, we helped out on different rebuilding projects and then from 4-6pm we led sport clinics for some of the disadvantaged children of New Orleans at a local YMCA.
